Google is widely known as being one of the most accessible companies in the world. So when they announced a new “interpreter mode” built in its Google Assistant app that supports 44 different languages, we raised our eyebrows and just had to take a look. It turns out it’s a very neat translation tool that immediately translates your surroundings on your phone. Unfortunately not only is American Sign Language not supported, but what we do here at Interpreter-Ears is actual interpreting – which involves cultural mediation and more than translation.
